What you need to know

Illegal loan apps promise instant money with no documents. After installation they demand access to contacts, photos and messages. The amount disbursed is far lower than promised after hidden 'processing' deductions, the tenure is a few days, and the effective interest can run into hundreds of percent a year.

When repayment is late — or sometimes even before the due date — recovery agents threaten the borrower, message relatives and colleagues, and circulate morphed photos. These apps are not linked to any RBI-regulated bank or NBFC.

Every genuine digital loan must be disbursed by a regulated entity. Under RBI's Digital Lending Directions, the app must name its lending bank or NBFC, issue a Key Fact Statement with the all-in annual percentage rate before you sign, and send money directly to your bank account.

If you have lost money, call the National Cyber Crime Helpline 1930 immediately and file a complaint at cybercrime.gov.in. Inform your bank at once: under RBI's customer-liability rules, reporting an unauthorised electronic transaction within three working days generally limits your liability to zero when the fault lies with a third party. In Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai you can also visit the nearest police station or cyber police cell with your bank statement and screenshots.
