What you need to know

A buyer on an online marketplace offers to pay for your item and sends a QR code or a collect request, saying you only need to 'scan to receive' or 'enter PIN to accept'. Entering the PIN actually sends money out of your account.

Other variants include fake payment screenshots, 'accidental' transfers followed by refund requests, and screen-sharing apps installed in the name of customer support.

Receiving money through UPI never requires scanning, approving or entering a PIN. Always confirm credits by checking your own bank statement, not a screenshot.

If you have lost money, call the National Cyber Crime Helpline 1930 immediately and file a complaint at cybercrime.gov.in. Inform your bank at once: under RBI's customer-liability rules, reporting an unauthorised electronic transaction within three working days generally limits your liability to zero when the fault lies with a third party. In Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai you can also visit the nearest police station or cyber police cell with your bank statement and screenshots.
