What you need to know
Students, homemakers and job seekers are offered part-time work: let money come into your account and forward it, keeping a commission. Others are asked to open accounts or sell their account kits and SIM cards.
The money is proceeds of cyber fraud. When victims complain, the mule account is frozen and the holder can face investigation under the IT Act and money-laundering laws, even if they claim ignorance.
Never lend, rent or sell your bank account, UPI ID, debit card or SIM. Genuine employers never route money through employee accounts.
If you have lost money, call the National Cyber Crime Helpline 1930 immediately and file a complaint at cybercrime.gov.in. Inform your bank at once: under RBI's customer-liability rules, reporting an unauthorised electronic transaction within three working days generally limits your liability to zero when the fault lies with a third party. In Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai you can also visit the nearest police station or cyber police cell with your bank statement and screenshots.
